Deadly Heatwave, 2003

During August 2003, France experienced a deadly heatwave. Researchers recorded around 15,000 excess deaths, meaning deaths above the number normally expected.

Older people were especially vulnerable. Unlike an earthquake, the destruction was not immediately visible in collapsed streets. The crisis revealed how dangerous prolonged heat can be and led to changes in monitoring and public health planning.
