Florence Flood, 1966

On November 4, 1966, the Arno River flooded Florence after prolonged heavy rain. Water and mud entered homes, shops, churches, and libraries.

Italy’s Civil Protection Department records 35 deaths across the region. Priceless paintings and books were damaged. Volunteers known as the mud angels arrived from Italy and abroad, helping rescue Florence’s threatened cultural heritage.
