Lisbon Region Flash Floods, 1967

On November 25 and 26, 1967, heavy rain triggered deadly flash floods around Lisbon.

Portugal’s weather service reports more than 500 deaths. Many victims lived in poorly built housing near streams and floodplains. Water rose rapidly overnight, leaving little time to escape. The tragedy revealed how dangerous extreme rainfall and vulnerable housing can be together.
