North Sea Flood, 1953

On the night of January 31, 1953, a North Sea storm surge overwhelmed parts of England’s east coast.

High tides and powerful winds pushed seawater into communities. In England, 307 people died, and thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. Many residents were unprepared. The disaster became an important reference point for stronger coastal protection and better flood warnings.
